November 26: Anti-Obesity Day: --
Well-timed in coming during the American Thanksgiving holiday
week, the goal of this international day is to highlight how
obesity is a public health hazard and encourage people to work
towards ending it. It was created in 2001 by the Indian wellness
brand V.L.C.C. with the active involvement of the medical
fraternity and other key stakeholders in all the countries where
it has a presence, as part of an annual campaign conducted in
November and December to promote the development of good lifestyle
habits to stay healthy and fit. During the 1930s, life insurance
companies in the United States started screening potential clients
for body weight, and in the 1950s, doctors openly linked
increasing rates of obesity with subsequent increases in the
diagnosis of heart diseases. The prevalence of obesity didn't
change much during the 1960s and '70s, but it escalated sharply
starting from the 1980s when the obesity rate was 13.4 %. However,
it wasn't until the year 2000 that the number of people who were
overweight or obese was greater than the number of those who were
underweight. In a 2011 to 2012 National Health and Nutrition
Examination Survey, which was reported in a 2012 issue of the
"Journal of the American Medical Association," it was
revealed that the obesity rate in the U.S. had skyrocketed to
34.9%. The Indian wellness brand V.L.C.C. created National Anti
Obesity Day in 2001 with the active involvement of the medical
fraternity and other key stakeholders in all the countries where
it has a presence, including the United States. It was part of an
annual campaign conducted in November and December to promote the
development of good lifestyle habits to stay healthy and fit. In
2012, V.L.C.C. tied up with the United Nations' World Food
Programme (W.F.P.), to launch a nutrition availability imbalance
awareness-building initiative: the "Global Balance Program,"
a public communication campaign that has been recognized as one of
the best Corporate Social Responsibility awareness-building
campaigns in the world by the World Economic Forum (W.E.F.). On

November 26: Good Grief Day: -- November
26, 1922: #BOTD: #HBD! Charles M. Schulz, nicknamed "Sparky",
American cartoonist who created the beloved long-running comic
strip Peanuts, which features the characters Charlie Brown and
Snoopy, regarded as one of the most influential cartoonists in
history (d. February 12, 2000) is #born Charles Monroe Schulz in
Minneapolis, Minnesota. He developed an interest in drawing while
growing up in Saint Paul. He was conscripted in 1943 and served in
the United States Army during the final years of World War II.
After returning to Minnesota, Schulz began his comic strip career
with Li'l Folks in 1947. In 1950, Schulz redeveloped Li'l Folks as
a four-panel comic strip and submitted it to United Features
Syndicate, who renamed it Peanuts and began publishing that
October. Schulz relocated to Northern California with his family
in 1958. Beginning with A Charlie Brown Christmas in 1965, he
helped write several animated television specials and four
animated films based on his characters. He continued drawing
Peanuts until his death in 2000. Schulz influenced other
cartoonists including Jim Davis, Murray Ball, Bill Watterson, Matt
Groening and Dav Pilkey. He was inducted into the United States
Hockey Hall of Fame in 1983 and the Hollywood Walk of Fame in
1996. He was also posthumously inducted into the United States
Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 2007. Schulz died in his sleep of a
heart attack in his Santa Rosa home on February 12, 2000, at the
age of 77. He was suffering from colorectal cancer. The last
original Peanuts strip was published the following day. He had
predicted that the strip would outlive him because the strips were
usually drawn weeks before their publication. Schulz is buried at
Pleasant Hills Cemetery in Sebastopol, California, where he first
lived after relocating from Minnesota. The world celebrates Good
Grief Day, named after the iconic Charlie Brown catchphrase "Good
Grief", on his November 26 birthday annually year to honor
his life and legacy. His stories and characters have brought
boundless delight to the globe. The fact that his characters -
Snoopy, Charlie Brown, and the rest of the gang - have withstood
the test of time demonstrates how influential these legendary
characters have had on global pop culture. "Peanuts" is
considered to be one of the greatest cartoon series in history,
lauded for its simple yet sophisticated humor, and its
philosophical and psychological social commentary. Multiple
"Peanuts" television and film iterations were made, with
the most notable being the 1965 T.V. special "A Charlie Brown
Christmas" and the 1965 T.V. special "It's The Great
Pumpkin, Charlie Brown", both of which continue to be run in
syndication today. From the eccentric beagle, Snoopy, and his
worrywart owner Charlie Brown to the colorful range of supporting
characters such as Charlie's buddy Linus Van Pelt, his
antagonistic sister Lucy van Pelt, the logical Woodstock, the
spunky Peppermint Patty, the cultured pianist Schroeder, and the
slovenly lovable Pig-Pen, Schulz's creations have brought laughter
and joy to millions around the world. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount

History Of The United States: Federal Holidays In The United
States: Thanksgiving (Thanksgiving Day, Thanksgiving [US],
American Thanksgiving): -- The first American holiday occurs, with
a proclamation by President George Washington, in response to a
request by Congress, for a Thanksgiving Day, a day of prayer and
public thanksgiving in gratitude for the successful establishment
of the new American democracy. Thanksgiving has been celebrated
nationally on and off since then; President Thomas Jefferson chose
not to observe the holiday, and its celebration was intermittent
until President Abraham Lincoln, in 1863, proclaimed a national
day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who
dwelleth in the Heavens", calling on the American people to
also, "with humble penitence for our national perverseness
and disobedience .. fervently implore the interposition of the
Almighty hand to heal the wounds of the nation...". Lincoln
declared it for the last Thursday in November. On June 28, 1870,
President Ulysses S. Grant signed into law the Holidays Act that
made Thanksgiving a yearly appointed federal holiday in Washington
D.C. On January 6, 1885, an act by Congress made Thanksgiving, and
other federal holidays, a paid holiday for all federal workers
throughout the United States. Under President Franklin D.
Roosevelt, the date was moved to one week earlier, observed
between 1939 and 1941 amid significant controversy. From 1942
onwards, Thanksgiving, by an act of Congress received a permanent
observation date, the fourth Thursday in November, no longer at

Wallachia up to that time during the Ottoman-Hungarian Wars,
Wallachian Prince Vlad The Impaler, also known by the title
Dracula and the inspiration of Bram Stoker's 1897 gothic horror

when he defeats Wallachian Voivode (Voivode: a military/political
ruler in Central, Southeastern and Eastern Europe since the Early
Middle Ages; Romanian: Warlord) Basarab Laiota, also known as
Basarab The Old, with the help of Stephen the Great (Stephen III
of Moldavia, Voivode of Moldavia from 1457 to 1504) and Stephen V
Bathory, the future Voivode of Transylvania from 1479 to 1493. The
Battle Of Breadfield (Hungarian: Kenyermezei Csata; German:
Schlacht Auf Dem Brodfeld; Romanian: Batalia De La Campul Painii;
Turkish: Ekmek Otlak Savasi) began on October 13, 1479, on the
Breadfield near the Saxon village of Alkenyer (also Zsibod,
German: Unterbrodsdorf, Romanian: Sibot) next to the river Maros
(Mures). The Hungarian army was led by Pal Kinizsi, Istvan
Bathory, Vuk Brankovic, and Basarab Laiota cel Batran. The result
of the battle was an important victory for the Kingdom of Hungary
and the Serbian Despotate. Wallachia or Walachia (Romanian: Tara
Romaneasca, "The Romanian Land" or "The Romanian

geographical region of Romania. It is situated north of the Lower
Danube and south of the Southern Carpathians. Wallachia is
traditionally divided into two sections, Muntenia (Greater
Wallachia) and Oltenia (Lesser Wallachia). Dobruja could sometimes
be considered a third section due to its proximity and brief rule
over it. Wallachia as a whole is sometimes referred to as Muntenia
through identification with the larger of the two traditional
sections. The traditional Hungarian name for Wallachia is
Havasalfold, literally "Snowy Lowlands", the older form
of which is Havaselve, meaning "Land beyond the snowy
mountains", which "snowy mountains" refers to the
the Transylvanian Alps (the Southern Carpathians); Transylvania

November 26, 1832: The History Of Rail
Transport (The History Of Railways): The History Of Rail
Transportation In The United States: The History Of The Streetcar
(The History Of The Trolley, The History Of The Tram): -- The
first horse-drawn streetcar carries passengers in New York City
along Fourth Avenue between Prince Street and 14th Street. A
streetcar or trolley, known outside of North America as a tram, is
rail vehicle that runs on tramway tracks along public urban
streets; some include segments of segregated right-of-way. Tram
vehicles are usually lighter and shorter than main line and rapid
transit trains. Today, most trams use electrical power, usually
fed by a pantograph sliding on an overhead line; older systems may
use a trolley pole or a bow collector, and in some cases by a
contact shoe on a third rail. If necessary, they may have dual
power systems - electricity in city streets, and diesel in more
rural environments. Trams are now commonly included in the wider
term "light rail". One of the advantages over earlier
forms of transit was the low rolling resistance of metal wheels on
steel rails, allowing the trams to haul a greater load for a given
effort. Problems included the fact that any given animal could
only work so many hours on a given day, had to be housed, groomed,
fed and cared for day in and day out, and produced prodigious
amounts of manure, which the streetcar company was charged with
disposing of. Electric trams largely replaced animal power in the
late 19th and early 20th century. Improvements in other forms of
road transport such as buses led to decline of trams in the mid
20th century. Trams have seen resurgence in recent years. On Sale

life. Adventurous from a young age, several days after he
graduated from high school, he and his friend Walter Port embarked
on an expedition by canoe from Minneapolis to York Factory on
Hudson Bay, sponsored by the Minneapolis Star newspaper (now The

Carter: The Quest For King Tutankhamun's Tomb MP4 Download DVD
November 26, 1922: Archaeology
(Archeology): Great Discoveries Of Archaeology: Egypt: Ancient
Egypt: New Kingdom: Eighteenth Dynasty (The Eighteenth Dynasty Of
Egypt, Dynasty XVIIII, 18th Dynasty, Dynasty 18): Tutankhamun: The
Tomb Of Tutankhamun (Valley Of The Kings Tomb KV62): -- Howard
Carter and Lord Carnarvon first go inside the tomb of King
Tutankhamen. On November 4, King Tut's tomb was discovered in the
Valley of the Kings at Luxor, Egypt, by English archaeologist
Howard Carter after several years of searching. The child-king
Tutankhamen became pharaoh at age nine and died around 1352 B.C.
at age 19. The tomb was found mostly intact, containing numerous
priceless items now exhibited in Egypt's National Museum in Cairo.
The tomb of Tutankhamun, also known by its tomb number, KV62, is
the burial place of Tutankhamun (reigned c. 1334-1325 BC), a
pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty of ancient Egypt, in the Valley
of the Kings. The tomb consists of four chambers and an entrance
staircase and corridor. It is smaller and less extensively
decorated than other Egyptian royal tombs of its time, and it
probably originated as a tomb for a non-royal individual that was
adapted for Tutankhamun's use after his premature death. Like
other pharaohs, Tutankhamun was buried with a wide variety of
funerary objects and personal possessions, such as coffins,
furniture, clothing and jewellery, though in the unusually limited
space these goods had to be densely packed. Robbers entered the
tomb twice in the years immediately following the burial, but
Tutankhamun's mummy and most of the burial goods remained intact.
The tomb's low position, dug into the floor of the valley, allowed
its entrance to be hidden by debris deposited by flooding and tomb
construction. Thus, unlike other tombs in the valley, it was not
stripped of its valuables during the Third Intermediate Period (c.
1070 - 664 BC). Tutankhamun's tomb was discovered in 1922 by
excavators led by Howard Carter. As a result of the quantity and
spectacular appearance of the burial goods, the tomb attracted a
media frenzy and became the most famous find in the history of
Egyptology. The death of Carter's patron, the Earl of Carnarvon,
in the midst of the excavation process inspired speculation that
the tomb was cursed. The discovery produced only limited evidence
about the history of Tutankhamun's reign and the Amarna Period
that preceded it, but it provided insight into the material
culture of wealthy ancient Egyptians as well as patterns of
ancient tomb robbery. Tutankhamun became one of the best-known
pharaohs, and some artefacts from his tomb, such as his golden
funerary mask, are among the best-known artworks from ancient
Egypt. Most of the tomb's goods were sent to the Egyptian Museum
in Cairo and are now in the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza,
although Tutankhamun's mummy and sarcophagus are still on display
in the tomb. Flooding and heavy tourist traffic have inflicted
damage on the tomb since its discovery, and a replica of the
burial chamber has been constructed nearby to reduce tourist
pressure on the original tomb. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till

(The Mainila Incident): -- The Soviet Army orchestrates an
incident which is used to justify the start of the Winter War with
Finland four days later, also known as the Russo-Finnish War. The
Shelling of Mainila was a military incident on November 26, 1939,
where the Soviet Union's Red Army shelled the Russian village of
Mainila, declared that the fire originated from Finland across the
nearby border and claimed to have had losses in personnel. Through
that false flag operation, the Soviet Union gained a great
propaganda boost and a casus belli for launching the Winter War
four days later. The Winter War was a military conflict between
the Soviet Union and Finland in 1939-1940. It began with the
Soviet invasion of Finland on November 30, 1939 (three months
after the outbreak of World War II), and it ended with the signing
of the Moscow Peace Treaty on March 13, 1940. The League Of
Nations deemed the attack illegal and expelled the Soviet Union

Turner, Black American-born Swiss singer, songwriter, dancer,
choreographer, arranger, author, sex symbol and beauty (d. May 24,
2024) is #born Anna Mae Bullock in Brownsville, Tennessee. Raised
in the Southeastern United States, Turner relinquished her
American citizenship after obtaining Swiss citizenship in 2013.
She began her career in 1958 as a featured singer with Ike
Turner's Kings of Rhythm, first recording under the name "Little
Ann." Her introduction to the public as Tina Turner began in
1960 as a member of the Ike and Tina Turner Revue. Success
followed with a string of notable hits credited to the duo,
including "A Fool in Love", "River Deep: Mountain
High" (1966), "Proud Mary" (1971), and "Nutbush
City Limits" (1973), a song which she herself wrote. In her
autobiography, I, Tina, she revealed several instances of severe
domestic abuse against her by Ike Turner prior to their 1976 split
and subsequent 1978 divorce. Raised a Baptist, she encountered
faith with Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism in 1971, crediting the
spiritual chant of Nam Myoho Renge Kyo, which Turner claims helped
her to endure during difficult times. After her divorce from Ike
Turner, she rebuilt her career through live performances. In the
1980s, Turner launched a major comeback with another string of
hits, starting in late 1983 with the single "Let's Stay
Together" followed by the 1984 release of her fifth solo
album Private Dancer which became a worldwide success. The album
contained the song "What's Love Got to Do with It",
which became Turner's biggest hit and won four Grammy Awards
including Record of the Year. Her solo success continued
throughout the 1980s and 90s with multi-platinum albums including
Break Every Rule and Foreign Affair, and with singles such as "We
Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)", "Typical Male",
"The Best", "I Don't Wanna Fight" and
"GoldenEye" for the 1995 James Bond film of the same
name. In 1993, "What's Love Got to Do with It" was used
as the title of a biographical film adapted from her
autobiography, along with the film's accompanying soundtrack
album. In addition to her musical career, Turner has also garnered
success acting in films, including the role of the Acid Queen in
the 1975 rock musical Tommy, a starring role alongside Mel Gibson
in the 1985 action film Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, and a cameo
role in the 1993 film Last Action Hero. One of the world's
best-selling artists of all time, she has also been referred to as
The Queen of Rock 'n' Roll. Turner has been termed the most
successful female Rock 'n' Roll artist, receiving eleven Grammy
Awards, including eight competitive awards and three Grammy Hall
of Fame awards. Turner has also sold more concert tickets than any
other solo performer in history. Her combined album and single
sales total approximately 180 million copies worldwide. She is
noted for her energetic stage presence, powerful vocals, and
career longevity. In 2008, Turner returned from semi-retirement to
embark on her Tina!: 50th Anniversary Tour. Turner's tour became
one of the highest selling ticketed shows of 2008-09. Rolling
Stone ranked Turner no. 63 on their list of 100 greatest artists
of all time, and no. 17 on their list of 100 greatest singers of
all time. In 1991, Turner was inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall
Of Fame. Turner announced in December 2016 that she has been
working on Tina, a new musical based on her life story, in
collaboration with Phyllida Lloyd and Stage Entertainment. Tina
Turner died at her home in Kusnacht, Switzerland, aged 83,
following years of illness. Turner's body was cremated after a
private funeral, and her ashes were given to her husband Erwin
Bach. Turner revealed in her 2018 memoir My Love Story that she
had multiple life-threatening illnesses. She had high blood
pressure since 1978, which remained mostly untreated, and resulted
in damage to her kidneys and eventual kidney failure. In 2013,
three weeks after her wedding to Erwin Bach, she had a stroke and
needed to learn to walk again. In 2016, she was diagnosed with
intestinal cancer. She attempted to treat her health problems with
homeopathy, which worsened her condition. Her chances of receiving
a kidney transplant were considered low and she was urged to start
dialysis. She signed up with an organization that facilitates
assisted suicide, a procedure which is legal in Switzerland,
becoming a member of Exit International. However, her husband
offered to donate a kidney for transplant. She accepted his
donation and had kidney transplantation surgery on April 7, 2017.
Turner also openly discussed her feeling of shame after
discovering that she had dyslexia. In the aftermath of her death,
many fellow artists mourned her loss, including Beyonce, Mariah
Carey, Janelle Monae, Questlove, Pete Townshend, Diana Ross, Dolly
Parton, Debbie Harry, Gloria Gaynor, Bryan Adams, Jimmy Barnes,
Peter Andre, Kerry Katona, Lionel Richie, Elton John, Madonna, Rod
Stewart, Lizzo, Brittany Howard, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards,
Ronnie Wood and Cher. Both Fantasia and Patti LaBelle respectively
paid tribute to Turner with a rendition of "Proud Mary"
at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards and a rendition of "The
Best" at the 2023 BET Awards. Turner also received tributes
by British model Naomi Campbell, as well as film and television
figures such as Oprah Winfrey, Angela Bassett, Jenifer Lewis,
Forest Whitaker, and Bette Midler and theater producer Joop van
den Ende. US president Joe Biden, as well as former presidents
Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, and Swiss president Alain Berset
also paid tribute to Turner through public statements. King

while denying them adequate food, sanitation and housing. The
Warsaw Ghetto (German: Warschauer Ghetto, officially Judischer
Wohnbezirk in Warschau, "Jewish Residential District in

the Jewish ghettos in German-occupied Europe during World War II.
It was established by the German authorities in November 1940;
within the new General Government territory of German-occupied
Poland. Over 400,000 Jews were imprisoned there, in an area of 3.4
km2 (1.3 sq mi), with an average of 9.2 persons per room, barely
subsisting on meager food rations. From the Warsaw Ghetto, Jews
were deported to Nazi concentration camps and mass-killing
centers. In the summer of 1942 at least 254,000 Ghetto residents
were sent to the Treblinka extermination camp during Grossaktion
Warschau under the guise of "resettlement in the East"
over the course of the summer. The ghetto was demolished by the
Germans in May 1943 after the Warsaw Ghetto Uprisings which had
temporarily halted the deportations. The total death toll among
the Jewish inhabitants of the Ghetto is estimated to be at least

November 26, 1941: World War II: The
Pacific War (The Asia-Pacific War, The Asiatic-Pacific Theater,
The Pacific Theater Of World War II): The Asiatic-Pacific Theater:
The Hull Note (The Outline Of Proposed Basis For Agreement Between
The United States And Japan:: -- The final American diplomatic
proposal made to the Empire of Japan before The Attack On Pearl
Harbor is delivered by Secretary of State Cordell Hull to the
Japanese Ambassador To The United States Kichisaburo Nomura. Its
text was a continuation of repeated previous American demands for
Japan to withdraw from China and from French Indochina; indeed,
its primary condition demanded the immediate and complete
withdrawal of all Japanese troops from French Indochina and China.
Japanese Prime Minister Tojo Hideki said to his cabinet that "this
is an ultimatum". The strike force that attacked Pearl Harbor
had set sail the day before, on the morning of November 26, 1941,
Japan time, which was November 25, Washington time. It could have
been recalled along the way, but no further diplomatic progress
was made. No further American proposals were made to Japan before
the attack on Pearl Harbor because the United States had secretly
received intelligence that Japan was preparing an invasion of
Thailand. At an Imperial Conference on December 1, Emperor
Hirohito approved attacks against the United States, the British
Empire and the Dutch colonial empire. On December 4, President
Roosevelt was warned by a 26-page ONI memo that the Japanese were
showing particular interest in the (US) West Coast, the Panama
Canal and the Territory of Hawaii On December 7-8, the Japanese
initiated attacks against the Philippines, Guam, Wake Island,
Malaya, Singapore, Hong Kong and Hawaii. The Hull Note asserted
that the United States' primary objection to Japanese military
policy was to the Second Sino-Japanese War between China and Japan
and the occupation of the Manchuria area of China by Japanese
troops and settlers. In protest, the United States sent support to
the Nationalist government of Chiang Kai-shek to aid their fight
against Japanese aggression. In reponse, Japanese military units
occupied southern French Indochina in July 1941, in violation an
express gentlemen's agreement to allow French administation to
continue in the area, in much the same fashion as Vichy France had
over southern France. The Japanese quickly stationed bombers at
air bases bases in Saigon and Cambodia, from which they could
attack British Malaya. In retaliation, the US government imposed
stiff trade sanctions on Japan, including the freezing of Japanese
assets in the United States; this effectively created an embargo
of oil exports, as Japan did not have the necessary currency with
which to buy American oil, a move seen at the time and since as a
deliberate attempt to provoke Japan into a war with the United
States before an oil embargo would cripple the ability of the
Japanese Empire to continue to expand throughout Asia and the
Pacific. Dean Acheson, a senior U.S. State Department official,
was the key decision maker of this policy. He shifted American
policy away from export restrictions and toward full-blooded
financial warfare against Japan This financial freeze was the most
devastating American action against Japan to date. On November 5,
1941, Emperor Hirohito approved, in Imperial Conference, the plan
for the attack on Pearl Harbor. At the same time, his government
made a last effort to arrive at a diplomatic solution of their
differences with the United States. Ambassador Kichisaburo Nomura
presented two proposals to the American government. The first,
Proposal A, was presented by him on November 6, 1941. It proposed
making a final settlement of the Sino-Japanese War with a partial
withdrawal of Japanese troops. United States military intelligence
had deciphered some of Japan's diplomatic codes so they knew that
there was a second proposal in case it failed. The United States
government stalled and then rejected it on November 14, 1941. On
November 20, 1941, Nomura presented Proposal B, which offered to
withdraw Japanese forces from southern Indochina if the United
States agreed to end aid to the Nationalist Chinese, freeze
military deployments in Southeast Asia (except for Japan's
reinforcement of northern Indochina), provide Japan with "a
required quantity of oil", and assist Japan in acquiring
materials from the Dutch East Indies. The United States was about
to make a counteroffer to this plan, which included a monthly
supply of fuel for civilian use. However, President Franklin D.
Roosevelt received a leak of Japan's war plan and news that
Japanese troopships were on their way to Indochina. He then
decided that the Japanese were not being sincere in their
negotiations and instructed Secretary Hull to drop the
counterproposal. By November 26, top American officials at the
White House, State, Navy and War departments believed that Japan
was moving invasion forces toward Thailand. They also believed
that the Japanese foreign ministry had put an absolute deadline on
negotiations of November 29 because "after that things are
automatically going to happen". The Americans were convinced
that war would start in a matter of days, probably with a surprise
Japanese attack. The previous plan, to present Japan with a
temporary policy of peachful coexistence (modus vivendi), was
strongly opposed by China and Britain and dropped. On Sale @ 15%

November 26, 1941: World War II: The
Pacific War (The Asia-Pacific War, The Asiatic-Pacific Theater,
The Pacific Theater Of World War II): The Asiatic-Pacific Theater:
The Attack On Pearl Harbor (The Battle Of Pearl Harbor, The Hawaii
Operation, Operation AI, Operation Z): -- The Imperial Japanese
Navy's Hawaii Operation begins as Japan's 1st Air Fleet (Japanese:
Daiichi Koku Kantai) also known as the Kido Butai ("Mobile
Force"), the world's largest fleet of aircraft carriers, a
combined carrier battle group comprising most of the aircraft
carriers and carrier air groups of the IJN during the first eight
months of the Pacific War, departs the Kuril Islands, then the
northernmost territories of Japan and since under Russian
administration since the end of World War II, to strike the U.S.
Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. On December 7, 1941, this
surprise military strike was launched, an event memorialized in
the United States as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Japan
intended the attack as a preventive action to keep the U.S.
Pacific Fleet from interfering with military actions they planned
in Southeast Asia against overseas territories of the United
Kingdom, the Netherlands, and the United States. Over the next
seven hours there were coordinated Japanese attacks on the
U.S.-held Philippines, Guam and Wake Island and on the British
Empire in Malaya, Singapore, and Hong Kong. The attack commenced
at 7:48 a.m. Hawaiian Time. The base was attacked by 353 Imperial
Japanese aircraft (including fighters, level and dive bombers, and
torpedo bombers) in two waves, launched from six aircraft
carriers. All eight U.S. Navy battleships were damaged, with four
sunk. All but the USS Arizona were later raised, and six were
returned to service and went on to fight in the war. The Japanese
also sank or damaged three cruisers, three destroyers, an
anti-aircraft training ship, and one minelayer. One hundred
eighty-eight U.S. aircraft were destroyed; 2,403 Americans were
killed and 1,178 others were wounded. Important base installations
such as the power station, dry dock, shipyard, maintenance, and
fuel and torpedo storage facilities, as well as the submarine
piers and headquarters building (also home of the intelligence
section), were not attacked. Japanese losses were light: 29
aircraft and five midget submarines lost, and 64 servicemen
killed. One Japanese sailor, Kazuo Sakamaki, was captured. The
surprise attack came as a profound shock to the American people
and led directly to the American entry into World War II in both
the Pacific and European theaters. The following day, December 8,
the United States declared war on Japan, and several days later,
on December 11, Germany and Italy declared war on the U.S. The
U.S. responded with a declaration of war against Germany and
Italy. Domestic support for non-interventionism, which had been
fading since the Fall of France in 1940, disappeared. There were
numerous historical precedents for unannounced military action by
Japan, but the lack of any formal warning, particularly while
negotiations were still apparently ongoing, led President Franklin
D. Roosevelt to proclaim December 7, 1941, "a date which will
live in infamy". Because the attack happened without a
declaration of war and without explicit warning, the attack on
Pearl Harbor was later judged in the Tokyo Trials to be a war
crime. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

(AShM): The Henschel Hs 293: -- The largest loss of US troops at
sea due to enemy action in a single incident occurs when at 1715
or 1725 the British troop transport ship HMT Rohna is attacked on
her port side at the after end of her engine room and Number Six
troop deck and sunk by a Luftwaffe Heinkel He 177A heavy bomber
piloted by Hans Dochtermann using a new German secret weapon, the
Henschel Hs 293 anti-ship radio controlled glide bomb with a
rocket engine slung underneath it, in the Mediterranean off Bougie
north of Bejaia, Algeria. Men poured on deck, many of them badly
wounded. Of the 1,138 men who were killed, 1,015 were US personnel
headed to North Africa. A further 35 US troops of the 2,000
originally embarked, later died from their wounds. As well as the
troops, five of Rohna's officers and 117 of her 195 crew were
killed, along with one of her 12 DEMS gunners and one hospital
orderly. USS Pioneer rescued 606 survivors. HMT Rohna was a
British India Steam Navigation Company passenger and cargo liner
that was built on Tyneside in 1926 as SS Rohna and requisitioned
as a troop ship in 1940. ("HMT" stands for His Majesty's
Transport.) The day prior, November 25, 1943, Rohna and four other
troop ships had left Oran in French Algeria and joined Convoy KMF
26 which was passing on its way from Britain to Alexandria. About
1630 hrs on November 26 the convoy was attacked by 14 Luftwaffe
Heinkel He 177A heavy bombers escorted by Junkers Ju 88 aircraft,
followed by between six and nine torpedo bombers. At the time the
convoy had a limited air escort of four land-based Free French Air
Force Spitfires. Later in the course of the attack they were
relieved by RAF Spitfires. The He 177As carried Henschel Hs 293
radio-guided, rocket-boosted glide bombs, almost 30 of which they
launched at the convoy. The convoy's combined anti-aircraft fire
seems to have impeded most of the attackers' attempts to guide
their glide bombs onto their targets. Rohna's DEMS gunners
contributed with her machine guns, Oerlikon autocannons and about
20 rounds from her 12-pounder gun. The convoy shot down at least
two aircraft and damaged several others. Rohna was the only
casualty. About 1715 or 1725 hrs a He 177A piloted by Hans
Dochtermann released a glide bomb that hit Rohna on her port side,
at the after end of her engine room and Number Six troop deck. Men
poured on deck, many of them badly wounded. Details of the loss
were revealed slowly over time. By February 1944 the US Government
had acknowledged that more than 1,000 soldiers had been lost in
the sinking of an unnamed troopship in European waters, but it
hinted that a submarine was responsible. By June 1945 the US
Government had released accurate casualty figures, the ship had
been identified as Rohna, and the cause of the sinking had been
identified as German bombers, but did not mention that a guided
bomb was used. The use of an "aerial glider bomb" was
first reported publicly on November 14, 1945 in an account of the
battle in the Salt Lake City Tribune. On March 9, 1947 the Chicago
Tribune published a complete account of the attack, including the
use of a "radio-controlled [sic] glider bomb." In 1948 a
history of British India Line in the Second World War was
published, stating "the missile was one of the new glider
bombs guided by wireless".] The US Government officially
released the remaining details of the incident, specifically that
a radio-controlled glide bomb had been used, in 1967 after the
passing of the Freedom Of Information Act. Members of Rohna's crew
who were killed are commemorated in the Second World War section
of the Merchant Navy War Memorial at Tower Hill in London. Her
lascar seamen (sailors and militiamen from the Indian
Subcontinent, Southeast Asia, the Arab world, or other territories
located to the east of the Cape of Good Hope who were employed on
European ships from the 16th century until the middle of the 20th
century) are commemorated in the Commonwealth War Graves
Commission monuments at Chittagong and Mumbai. A monument to the
US troops who were killed was unveiled at Fort Mitchell National
Cemetery in Seale, Alabama in 1996. In 1962, the traffic median of
the Esplanade in Bronx, New York, at the corner of Astor Avenue,
was named in memory of Private Sidney Weissman, a local resident
killed in the sinking of the Rohna. In 1998 Dr James G. Bennett,
who lost a brother in the sinking, published a book, The Rohna
Disaster, through the self-publishing service Xlibris. In it he
alleges that the heavy loss of life was due to the incompetence
and cowardice of the Rohna's lascar crew and faulty safety
procedures and equipment aboard. Wartime reports by the lieutenant
colonel in command of the US troops aboard, and by Rohna's second
officer and other survivors, contradict aspects of Bennett's
allegations. The Hs 293 anti-ship radio controlled glide bomb
project was started in 1940, based on the "Gustav Schwartz
Propellerwerke" pure glide bomb that was designed in 1939.
The Schwartz design did not have a terminal guidance system;
instead, it used an autopilot to maintain a straight course. It
was intended to be launched from a bomber at sufficient distance
to keep the aircraft out of range of anti-aircraft fire. A
Henschel team, under Dr. Herbert Wagner, developed it the
following year by adding a Walter HWK 109-507 rocket engine
underneath, providing 590 kg (1,300 lb) thrust for ten seconds.
This allowed the bomb to be used from a lower altitude and at an
increased range. Some examples used the BMW 109-511 of 600 kg
(1,300 lb) thrust. The weapon consisted of a modified standard 500
kilogram Sprengbombe-Cylindrisch-class SC 500 "general
purpose" bomb with an added "Kopfring" on the nose
for maritime use, to help ensure a relatively perpendicular axis
of impact, with a thin metal shell and a high explosive charge
inside, equipped with a rocket engine beneath the bomb, a pair of
aileron-fitted wings, and the receiving FuG 230 component of the
Kehl-Strassburg MCLOS guidance and control system, shared with the
contemporary Fritz X gravity-propulsion, pioneering PGM
armor-piercing bomb. The elevator was operated with an
electrically powered jackscrew as the only proportional control,
while the ailerons were operated with solenoids. Remote flight
control was provided through the Kehl-Strassburg link, with the Hs
293's control setup having no movable rudder on the ventral
tailfin. The 109-507 monopropellant booster rocket provided for
only a short burst of speed making range dependent on the height
of launch. From a height of 1,400 m (4,600 ft) the Hs 293 had a
range of about 12 km (7.5 mi; 6.5 nmi). The Hs 293 was intended to
destroy unarmoured ships, unlike the unpowered, armour-piercing
Fritz X, which used the same Kehl-Strassburg system. Five coloured
flares were attached to the rear of the weapon to make it visible
at a distance to the operator. During night operations flashing
lights instead of flares were used. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount

intense V-1 and V-2 rocket attacks on Antwerp, Belgium. After the
British 11th Armoured Division liberated Antwwerp on September 4,
1944, the Germans attempted to destroy the Port of Antwerp, which
was used by the Allies to bring new material ashore, by firing
housands of V-Weapons: Rheinbote short range ballistic missiles,
V-1 flying bombs and V-2 long range ballistic missiles were fired
(more V-2s than used on all other targets during the entire war
combined), causing severe damage to the city but failed to destroy
the port due to poor accuracy. On November 27, a V-2 struck
Teniers Square, Antwerp, Belgium, when a British military convoy
was passing through the square, killing 126, including 26 Allied
soldiers. During the war, a total of 2,342 V-weapons, 732 of the
V-1 type and 1610 of the more advanced V-2 type, fell in a 10-mile
radius around Antwerp alone. A post-war SHAEF report estimated
V-Bombs had been responsible for killing 5,000 people and injuring
a further 21,000, mostly in the cities of Antwerp and Liege. On

Farewell Concerts At Royal Albert Hall 1968 Plus Bonus MP4 DVD
November 26, 1968: Aesthetics: Performing
Arts: Finales: Musical Finales: British Musical Finales: Grand
Finales: Cream's Final Concert (Cream's November 25-26, 1968 Royal
Albert Hall Concert): -- British blues rock band Cream performs
the last of their two November 25-26 farewell concerts at the
Royal Albert Hall in South Kensington, London, England. Thes two
concerts were filmed for a BBC documentary "Farewell Concert"
whose premiere broadcast was on Sunday, January 5, 1969, and the
film was later released and shown in theatres. The opening acts
for the concert were future progressive rock stars Yes, who were
just starting out, and Taste, an Irish trio led by Rory Gallagher.
From its creation, Cream was faced with some fundamental problems
that would later lead to its dissolution in November 1968.
Antagonism between bassist Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker
created tensions in the band. Marshall amplifier stacks during
these years had improved and produced more power, and Jack Bruce
pushed their volume levels higher (these go to 11! ;) ), creating
great annoyance for for Baker, who was well known for being easily
and vociferously annoyed, and even his powerful drumming had
trouble competing with Bruce's roaring stacks. Guitarist Eric
Clapton spoke of a concert during which he stopped playing and
neither Baker nor Bruce noticed. Clapton has also commented that
Cream's later gigs mainly consisted of its members showing off,
and as a blues purist, he was interested only in the art of the
performance. These tensions between bassist Jack Bruce and drummer
Ginger Baker led to the band's decision in May 1968 to break up
during a tour of the US, though the band were persuaded to make a
final album, Goodbye, and to tour, culminating in two final
farewell concerts at the Royal Albert Hall In July, the band
announced publicly that they would break up after a farewell tour
of the US and after playing two concerts in London. Jack Bruce was
quoted as saying "Travel can kill a group. It becomes boring,
tiring and very depressing." Cream were a formed in London in
1966. Bruce was the primary songwriter and vocalist, although
Clapton and Baker also sang and contributed songs. Formed from
members of previously successful bands, they are widely regarded
as the world's first supergroup. Cream were highly regarded for
the instrumental proficiency of each of their members. Their music
spanned many genres of rock music, including blues rock
("Crossroads", "Born Under a Bad Sign"),
psychedelic rock ("Tales of Brave Ulysses", "White
Room"), and hard rock ("Sunshine of Your Love",
"SWLABR"). In their career, they sold more than 15
million records worldwide. The group's third album, Wheels of Fire
(1968), is the world's first platinum-selling double album. On

The World: Aviation History Series + Bonus MP4 Or DVD Set
November 26, 2003: Aviation: The History
Of Aviation: The History Of Civil Aviation: Final Flights: -- The
British-French turbojet-powered supersonic passenger jet airliner
Concorde makes its final flight with a landing at Filton, Bristol,
UK. Concorde is a British-French turbojet-powered supersonic
passenger airliner that was operated from 1976 until 2003. It had
a maximum speed over twice the speed of sound at Mach 2.04 (1,354
mph or 2,180 km/h at cruise altitude), with seating for 92 to 128
passengers. First flown in 1969, Concorde entered service in 1976
and continued flying for the next 27 years. It is one of only two
supersonic transports to have been operated commercially; the
other is the Soviet-built Tupolev Tu-144, which operated in
passenger service from 1977 to 1978. Concorde was jointly
developed and manufactured by Sud Aviation (later Aerospatiale)
and the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC) under an Anglo-French
treaty. Twenty aircraft were built, including six prototypes and
development aircraft. Air France (AF) and British Airways (BA)
were the only airlines to purchase and fly Concorde. The aircraft
was used mainly by wealthy passengers who could afford to pay a
high price in exchange for the aircraft's speed and luxury
service. For example, in 1997, the round-trip ticket price from
New York to London was 7,995 USD, more than 30 times the cost of
the cheapest option to fly this route. The original program cost
estimate of 70 million Pounds Sterling met huge overruns and
delays, with the program eventually costing 1.3 billion Pounds
Sterling. It was this extreme cost that became the main factor in
the production run being much smaller than anticipated. Later,
another factor which affected the viability of all supersonic
transport programmes was that supersonic flight could only be used
on ocean-crossing routes, to prevent sonic boom disturbance over
populated areas. With only seven airframes each being operated by
the British and French, the per-unit cost was impossible to
recoup, so the French and British governments absorbed the
development costs. British Airways and Air France were able to
operate Concorde at a profit, in spite of very high maintenance
costs, because the aircraft was able to sustain a high ticket
price. Among other destinations, Concorde flew regular
transatlantic flights from London's Heathrow Airport and Paris's
Charles de Gaulle Airport to John F. Kennedy International Airport
in New York, Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia,
and Grantley Adams International Airport in Barbados; it flew
these routes in less than half the time of other airliners.
Concorde's name, meaning "harmony" or "union",
was chosen to reflect the co-operation on the project between the
United Kingdom and France. In the UK, any or all of the type are
known simply as Concorde, with no definite article "the".
Concorde won the 2006 Great British Design Quest organised by the
BBC and the Design Museum, beating other well-known designs such
as the BMC Mini, the miniskirt, the Jaguar E-Type, the London Tube
map and the Supermarine Spitfire. The type was retired in 2003,
three years after the crash of Air France Flight 4590, in which
all passengers and crew were killed. The general downturn in the
commercial aviation industry after the September 11 attacks in
2001 and the end of maintenance support for Concorde by Airbus
(the successor company of both Aerospatiale and BAC) also
contributed.
